LC Energy's Path to Net Zero: Overcoming Emission Challenges

LC Energy
Background:

LC Energy is a leading biomass fuel supplier, providing legally and sustainably sourced timber to businesses and individuals in the UK. LCE approached 5D Net Zero to help the business implement sustainability strategies with the target of becoming carbon neutral and eventually achieve net zero emissions.

Challenge:

After collecting LC Energy's data, the 5D team worked to reveal accurate measurements of the business's Scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 is a challenge for all businesses - we take pride in helping them decipher the stats so we can put realistic reduction goals in place. There are also high amounts of haulage as part of LC Energy's day-to-day function, an especially difficult source of emissions to reduce.

5D’s Solution:

We built a baseline for the entirety of LC Energy's scope 3 emissions:

We guided LC Energy to engage their supply chain. (opened discussions with suppliers and sub-contractors, advocating for the transition to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)
Calculated full Scope 3 emissions to increase transparency
Converted to HVO at 2 sites
Helped switch from dieseil forklifts to electric
Company-owned fleet switched to electric
Implemented mileage tracking software
2 sites and head office are now on renewable electricity tariffs
Results:

Through the creation of a bespoke and thorough carbon reduction plan, we've supported LC Energy in establishing a 2020 baseline and reducing their emissions year-on-year. We've helped them reduce their scope 2 emissions by 52% so far and have developed a full scope 3 report. As a growing multi-site business, we're excited to continue supporting LC Energy towards their goals of carbon neutrality and net zero.

FAQs

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions produced directly or indirectly by an organisation or individual, from activities such as energy consumption, waste generation, and transportation. We adhere to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol which splits you emissions into 3 scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), Scope 3 (indirect, value chain emissions). Don’t panic, we will run through all of this on your discovery call and data collection call with us.  

To accurately assess your carbon footprint, we prioritise the spend-based method, which measures actual activities that produce emissions, making it more precise than the spend method, which estimates emissions based on financial expenditure. You’ll need to gather data such as: Electricity usage (in kWh from your bills); Employee commute distances (in miles); Gas bills for heating and other uses. We’ll guide you through this process during a 1-hour data collection call, so there’s no need to worry—we’re here to help!

First, we set a baseline carbon footprint and then create reduction initiatives that focus on short-term wins, such as employee education, energy efficiency upgrades, and the adoption of new technologies.
