This household biogas carbon offset project’s main objective is to replace the prevalent use of inefficient wood-fired mud stoves with clean, sustainable, and efficient biogas technology. To achieve this, 13,549 biogas plants have been distributed across households situated in Uttarakhand province, India. The biogas plants use cow dung as feedstock to fuel the digester. The produced biogas can be used for cooking and water heating purposes. This initiative helps to reduce indoor pollution associated with traditional firewood stoves and helps mitigate land degradation issues. Furthermore, the digesters promote the appropriate disposal of organic waste, which helps improve hygienic conditions in rural areas. The residue from the biodigesters can also be used for organic fertiliser, enhancing soil conditions and increasing soil productivity in rural areas. This project not only contributes to sustainable development by replacing non-renewable firewood with biogas, but also addresses environmental and health concerns associated with traditional cooking methods.
